How is Age Calculated?
Calculating age might seem simple, but precision requires accounting for the complexities of the Gregorian calendar. Our calculator uses the chronological method commonly used in Western cultures, where a person's age increases on their birthday.
Leap Years and Month Lengths
The Earth takes approximately 365.24 days to orbit the Sun. To keep our calendars aligned with the seasons, we add an extra day to February every four years (with certain exceptions for century years). Our algorithm accounts for these variations to ensure that someone born on February 29th has their age calculated correctly in non-leap years.
Cultural Variations
While most of the world uses the system where you are "0" years old at birth, some cultures, particularly in East Asia, consider a newborn to be one year old at birth. This calculator follows the international standard (0 at birth).
